Case Studies

Construction of new staff facilities, Filton nursery


Filton Avenue Nursery School brought in Helm Construction for this project, which involved the installation of three linked accommodation units on top of the wartime structure of the nursery. This was a unique challenge and Helm were asked to have finished and left the site within 10–12 weeks. Through-out this particular build Helm had to ensure the safety of children and staff at all times.

The units had to be secured and counter-weighted, due to being balanced on top of the old air-raid shelter, as well as providing access to the units themselves. The walls and roof to the modular units were fully insulated and finished with timber cladding.

This project was completed in June 2016, with the new staff room being fully fitted with kitchen appliances creating, a large space for the staff at the Nursery. It was finished within schedule and budget.

Church View Medical Centre, Ilminster


Helm Construction were chosen to create this new build Medical Centre, including car parking. 

Church View Medical Centre is situated in the town of Ilminster, which lies in the countryside of South West Somerset. The medical centre required a new doctor’s surgery building to replace the portacabins that they had been operating out of for the previous twenty years. Helm was tasked with constructing a new unit that would accommodate the future expansion plans for the Medical Centre, which included preparation for a second story extension to be added. Stonework and a standing seam roof that was in line with the appearance of the existing village hall next door ensured that this new building blended in with the structures prevailing in the area.  

Firstly, we created a temporary structure to allow the surgery to operate and service patients whilst works were in progress. Helm had to be mindful throughout of continued public access to an adjacent building. The limited available space for welfare and material storage meant that smaller regular deliveries were planned to site and these had to in turn be coordinated around surgery ‘quiet times’. This was a turn-key project that allowed for all the finished decoration throughout and equipment.  

The surgery was finished in May 2014, delivered fully landscaped with an expanded car park area. The surgery continued to operate effectively throughout the construction and patients were not inconvenienced. 

Construction of 7 modern properties


This road in Bristol, replaces an old timber yard and builders merchants which ran alongside a stream. There was tight access to get into and out of site, so careful planning and scheduling of deliveries was required. We needed to barrier off the stream so the banks of the stream could be reinforced. Due to the restricted access to site, it was important to plan small and regular deliveries as well as use a built-out area for materials storage.

The result is 7 beautifully constructed 2 and 3 bedroom modern properties, with parking. The finished look creates a contemporary feel, with the positioning of the windows allowing additional light into the houses. We also added timber cladding and render which was finished to a high standard. The 7 properties have improved the local areas appearance and have provided additional housing close in a central, busy location in Clevedon.

Construction of two, three storey, semi-detached luxury properties, Henleaze


Henleaze is a northern suburb of Bristol. It is an almost entirely residential inter-war development, with Edwardian streets on its southern fringes. Helm were tasked with the demolition of four existing garages and constructing a pair of new three storey, traditionally built, semi-detached dwellings in their place. The homes were built over three levels, with a garage and a kitchen diner on the ground floor, living room on the first floor and three/four bedrooms on the second floor.

Helm undertook ground works which included the demolition of the four garages. The new properties were constructed by including insulated cavity walls, timber upper floors, aluminium double glazing and a gas central heating system. 

Both of the properties feature an Enterview 5 Video Door Entry System and a Velux Integra Control Pad fitted which operates the skylight windows at the top of the properties. The installation of bi-folding doors on the ground floor at the rear of both of the properties allowed the open plan kitchen/dining room to open up leading onto the garden. The kitchen/dining room was fully fitted with all Bosch appliances.

The properties were delivered to the client fully decorated throughout in May 2015.

Nine New Apartments, Cotham


Cotham is a leafy inner suburb of Bristol, situated between Clifton and St Pauls, and is a residential area with large old houses, many of which are used as hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation, or divided into flats, and a selection of small independent shops. Helm were awarded this project of developing of nine new apartments in Cotham. The apartments include gardens at the rear and a landscaped communal garden.

Helm began with the ground works, including the careful removal of a stone boundary wall which was re-established after the build. The road that we were building on presented a multitude of obstacles, from difficulties with access to a particularly narrow frontage on to a busy route. Helm needed to use smaller wagons delivering just a few pallets of blocks or bricks on a day by day basis, rather than having all the materials on site and ready to use. 

After overcoming the challenges, the result was 9 beautiful aparments. Each of the apartments features Bellisimo door entry systems, dual frame windows and automatic roof opening vents. The kitchens feature in Greenwich Shaker light oak with granite work surfaces and the apartments feature block wood flooring and are heated throughout with Dimplex PLX panel convector heaters. The gardens at the rear of the property back onto a landscaped communal garden. This project was delivered to the client towards the beginning of March 2015 fully decorated throughout.

Large residential build and refurbishment, Rudgeway


The brief for this project in Rudgeway was to completely renovate and extend the existing property.

The work involved stripping the original part of the building back to its shell and constructing a new ‘cut’ roof to accommodate a second floor. 

We had to deal with a large amount of asbestos and the existing steel infrastructure. We then installed underfloor heating, a solar photovoltaic system and a heat recovery and air source heating system. Finally we added extended multifold external doors to the rear of the property, providing uninterrupted views across South Gloucestershire.

We're happy to say that the project was delivered on time and within budget.
