Technical information

In basic terms, a ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground using water or antifreeze (also known as brine). The heat is then transferred to the main heat pump unit, which disperses it to your home using a water-based heating system.

The Vitocal 200-G comes with a highly efficient compressor which amplifies the heat taken from the ground, enabling it to achieve maximum flow temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius. Alongside heating, the Viessmann Vitocal 200-G can be adapted to offer passive cooling in summer.

The Vitocal 200-G is relatively quiet compared to many other heat pumps on the market, operating around 49dBA. As such, it’s perfect for semi-detached housing. Its sleek, modern design and compact indoor unit are also perfect for new-builds and homes with more limited space.

The unit is equipped with a menu-guided control unit with a plain text and graphic display, making it intuitive to use. The Vitocal 200-G can also be controlled remotely via the Vitocare app, which allows you to change modes, adjust the desired internal temperature of your home, and more.

How much does the Viessmann Vitocal 200-G ground source heat pump cost?

The Vitocal 200-G is quite expensive compared to other ground source heat pumps on the market, starting around £11,500 for the 5.6kW model. This is the price of the unit alone, so you’ll have to factor in installation and labour costs when making an estimate of how much you’ll end up paying.

How does the Viessmann Vitocal 200-G ground source heat pump compare to other heat pumps?

The Viessmann Vitocal 200-G is a great choice for medium-sized homes, but if you need to heat a larger space, you should look at Viessmann’s Vitocal 350-G instead. It’s one of the most powerful ground source heat pumps you can buy, with single-stage heating outputs of up to 42.3kW and 2-stage outputs as high as 84.6kW.

Those with smaller homes and/or a tighter budget may want to consider the Kensa Shoebox, which as its name implies, is super compact. It’s less powerful than the Vitocal 200-G, but it also comes with a much more wallet-friendly price tag.

Customer reviews

While there are few reviews dedicated specifically to the 200-G ground source heat pump, as of November 2025, Viessmann is rated an impressive 4.4 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot from over 5,400 reviews. Many of these reviews are about Viessmann boilers, but on the whole, customers are happy with the hardware as well as the level of service they receive.

That said, some complain about the relatively short warranty provided by Viessmann.

“From my first enquiry to Viessmann for the name of their nearest accredited installer, to the final switch on of my new 151A air source heat pump, the whole experience has been simple and stress free. Now the installation is complete and I am delighted with the quality, quiet and running costs”

“I had read and reviews for heat pumps that it was very important that you chose the right installer and the problems arose when the engineer who installed your heat pump inexperienced. I did get three quotations one from Octopus and a couple more from other engineers including Heat Geeks. The installation firm(Libtek) that I employed recommended Viessmann and I must say that they could not have recommended a better heat pump.”

Our recommendation

The Viessmann Vitocal 200-G is a great middle-of-the-road ground source heat pumps, with a high efficiency rating and very low noise levels. While the high price tag and short standard warranty are a letdown, in terms of efficiency and output, it’s perfect for medium-sized homes looking for a heating solution to help them cut their energy bills and their carbon footprint.
